Jesus Teaches About Spiritual Blindness

John 9: 35-41

35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”

37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”

38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.

39 Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”

40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”

41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.

REFLECTION:

Several observations presented in this passage.  The first, Jesus provided for the man’s physical need before he addressed his spiritual need.  This tells me he cares about our physical needs as well as our spiritual.  The second, the man admitted that he did not know about Jesus, but asked if he would tell him about Jesus.  And Jesus told him who he was.  This tells me that in order for people to know about Jesus we have to tell them who he is, be witnesses for Christ.  My third observation and there’s more, but I will conclude with this.  The Scribes and Pharisees both believed they had spiritual insight and were more blind than the man who just believed in Jesus, because their sight was blinded by sin, their unbelief in Jesus Christ.  This tells me we need to see Jesus in every situation of our lives.  It is not a one-time thing.

APPLICATION:

I will apply the situations in my life to my faith in Jesus to see if it lines up with his teachings and his way.

PRAYER:

Lord, I thank you for your mercy and your grace.  I pray that you would open my eyes daily to my sin and help me to see you in each situation in my life.  Help me to see as you would have me to see.  Then help me to tell others about you so that they too can believe and see.  In Jesus name I pray.  Amen
