Jesus Teaches About Marriage and Divorce, Part 1

Matthew 19: 1-6

When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan. Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.

Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?”

“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’[aand said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’[b]? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

REFLECTION:

Jesus is addressing marriage. But two enemies have joined forces to discredit Jesus, by challenging the principles God has established for marriage. In these passages I see that Jesus directed the opposition back to God’s original intention.

APPLICATION:

When the enemy within me or outside of me tries to trap me with incorrect thoughts about God’s plan, I can direct the enemy back to God’s original intention for the situation at hand.

PRAYER:

Lord help me to see your original plan for my life when the enemy tries to show me a way out of trusting you and living as you have planned. Amen
